Product description

Water tracing dyes make the flow of water inside pipework visible through colouring. Often what matters is following the path of the water from its source – a washbasin, say – to the sewer connection, and checking whether any escapes on the way. The dye makes those points clearly visible.

Besides waste water pipes, the dyes also help narrow down leaking roofs, terrace and balcony drains, the causes of damp cellars and leaks in underground car parks.

Red, yellow and blue are used for purely visual flow checks. Uranin is the dye of choice when the water has to be traced over longer distances: it fluoresces under UV light and therefore remains detectable at dilutions where a purely visual dye would have disappeared long before. A matching UV lamp is available as an accessory.

How to use it

Dissolve one level teaspoon of the powder in 10 litres of water and introduce the coloured water at the point to be tested. Colour intensity is controlled through the dosage. Stick to the recommended dose and observe the safety data sheet for the colour in question.

Before you start: When tracing leaks in domestic pipework, seeping dye can stain walls and ceilings. Also check whether authorities need to be informed for your particular case – for instance where water is discharged into watercourses or public sewers.

Safety and disposal

Avoid contact between the powder and your skin or eyes, and wear protective gloves and safety goggles. If powder gets into the eye, rinse thoroughly with water for at least 15 minutes. After skin contact, wash off with soap and water. Seek medical advice if swallowed. Ensure adequate ventilation when handling the powder and do not breathe in dust.

Note on the blue variant: Different handling advice applies to this colour. Direct eye contact may be irritating, and skin and respiratory irritation are possible. Chemical-resistant gloves to EN ISO 374, safety goggles to EN 166 and, where ventilation is insufficient, respiratory protection with a particle filter are recommended. Please read the corresponding safety data sheet before use.

Avoid releasing undiluted dye into sewers or watercourses. If larger quantities reach them undiluted, notify the responsible authorities.

The dyes are not intended for colouring food and must not be used for that purpose – not for eggs or drinks either. Leftover dye powder must be disposed of as chemical waste and does not belong in household refuse.
